The Strypes… line of the times
Really enjoying the 6 Music Live at Maida Vale week. The Everything Everything set on Lauren Laverne’s show was corking, have to say. With Ms Laverne hopping on stage for a chat after every other song, even taking questions from the audience at one point, it felt a bit odd, but it worked beautifully, charming chaps that they are.
The standout so far though came on Cerys Matthew’s Sunday morning show, one of the finest two hours of radio you’ll get all week without a session by The Strypes. Imagine how good it was this week then.
In fear of wearing my nicest bandwagon jumper, The Strypes fry my little pea brain. They are fried peas good. I am, no surprise, probably a good six months off the pace here, but hey ho. Actually, I’ve just looked and Lester had them as New Band Of The Day (no 1,396) on The Guardian on 15 November 2012. Pretty chuffed I’m actually only three months behind him. Face it, he has to find a band a day so finger on the beating heart. Three months behind him? Nothing. Weller and Beck (Jeff) are fans, NME are, apparently, over them like a rash, but no one noticed because what they think doesn’t matter much any more. The clincer is they’re signed to Mercury Records. or Universal as they’re really called. How could I have not noticed? Think pretty much everyone will be noticing this lot soon.
So anyway, I heard the session on Sunday and I’ve left it to sink in ever since. Blimey. Quite how something like this can happen makes me a bit dizzy. Four Irish lads, barely halfway through their teens making music like it was 1963-ish. I guess in 1963-ish you had lads halfway through their teens making R&B just like this, but that’s what they were supposed to do. These days, they’re supposed to be making nasty on Garageband aren’t they? Aren’t they? Where the flipping heck did this come from?
This? The ‘this’ is life-affirming stuff. It’s loud, it’s fast, at its bonkers best it descends into a total joyous racket. There’s even a harmonica for crying out loud. What’s not to like. And that’s more a statement than a question. Our favourite track so far, at this moment in time? ‘Got Love If You Want It’.
